2006 Youth Concerto Competition
Winners |
|
The
Clear Lake Symphony held a competition on March 4 & 5, 2006 for young artists from Houston area high schools,
junior highs, and elementary schools. |
|
The Youth Concerto Competition winners
will be provided with a scholarship and perform with the Clear Lake
Symphony at the April 1, 2006 concert. |

| Hailey
Gowan (Flute)
Winner, "Fantasie on Hungarian Motives", by Doppler. Age
14 in the 9th grade at Clear Brook High School. Daughter of Brian
& Kelly Gowan. Studied flute 3
years. Teachers: Norma Williams, Stan Mauldin and Michael Ary. Formerly studied under
Bob Anderson and Ema Armanious.
She enjoys baking, dancing, music and spending time with family and
friends. She is an actress in the 2006 Clear Brook Winter Percussion
Ensemble, directed by Christopher Retschulte. Hailey plans to major in music performance in college. |

Winner, "Fantasie on Hungarian Motives", by Doppler. Age 14
in the 9th grade at Clear Lake High School. Daughter of Drs. Joe
& Linda Pouzar. Studied flute 6 years. Teacher: Norma
Williams. Carole enjoys drama, musical theater, writing and music
competition. She takes voice and piano lessons, plays in the school
band and sings in the school choir. Carole plans to major in musical
and vocal performance. |

A. Cedillo (Flute) Winner,
"Ballade", by Martin. Age 18 in the 12th grade at
Westfield High School.
Daughter of Aniceto & Imelda Cedillo. Studied flute 8 years. Teacher:
Dr. Sidney Carlson. Maristel enjoys music, playing her electric bass
guitar, dinging, dance, poetry, horseback riding and spending time with
the family. She plans to major in music performance and music
education. |

"Piano Concerto No, 1 in D-flat, by Prokofiev. Age 15 in the 10th grade at
Kinkaid Lake High School. Son of Larry and Ruth Kwak. Benjamin studied piano
10 years. Teacher: John Weems. He enjoys playing tennis and
reading novels by Vince Flynn. He is also a member of the Kinkaid HS
Debate Team. Benjamin plans to pursue a career in medical research. |

of Man-Ying & Clara Chan. Stephanie studied piano 11years.
Teacher: John Weems. She enjoys reading and watching sports. |

M. Simon (Violin) Winner,
"Violin Concerto in A minor", by Accolay. Age 12 in the 6th grade at
Memorial Middle School. Son of Leonard and Mary Jane Simon. Studied
violin 7 years. Teacher: Kathy Karpicke. Brandon's hobbies
include playing in a band he formed and playing baseball. His
ambition is to become a solo violinist and a studio guitar player. |

Mark Yee (Cello) Winner,
"Cello Concerto in B minor," by Dvorak. Age 18 in the 12th grade
in the High School for Performing & Visual Arts. Son of Jun and
Ann Yee. Studied cello 7
years. Mark started his cello lessons at age 11.
He currently studies with Richard Aaron from the Cleveland Institute of
Music and Chris French from Rice University, Associate Principal of the
Houston Symphony. Mark has spent his summers at the Aria International
Festival, the Texas Music Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival. He
has also served principal cellist of Region XIX for four consecutive years
and has been assistant principal of the Texas Music Educators Association,
Houston Youth Symphony, and in the Virtuosi of Houston.
Mark has performed in master classes of Lynn Harrell, Desmond Hoebig, David
Finckel, and Laszlo Varga. He currently plays on an 1834 Brenardel
cello. |
